The participants in mourning will offer one last farewell to Pope Francis on Saturday during his funeral mass, which should attract international and cardinal leaders, archbishops and priests around the world to the Vatican. The rites will be transmitted by networks around the world.
Until the funeral, its body, dressed in papal vestments, will be in the state in the Basilica of San Pietro.
Here's what to know.
Where can I look at the funeral?
The funeral will take place on Saturday at 10:00 local time (4 AM Eastern) in St. Peter's Square, announced the Vatican.
The New York Times will broadcast the funeral as part of its live coverage on Saturday and many US television networks, including NBC, CBS, CNN and ABC, are planning to transmit it. International broadcasters, such as the BBC in Great Britain, will also cover the funeral.
The funeral will also be broadcast on the Vatican news channel on YouTube, which has streamed most of the rites.
Where can I look at the funeral internationally?
In Canada, the main networks such as CBC television and CTV across the country should bring the service. In the United Kingdom, the news networks including Sky News and the BBC should also transmit the funeral.
In Brazil, there is news of Globo and Brazil of the CNN. And in Spain, spectators should be able to capture the service on Televisión Española with its 24 Horas news channel.
What will happen to the funeral?
Pope Francis' funeral will follow a series of secular rituals.
Saturday, a public funeral mass will be held in front of the Basilica of San Pietro, chaired by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals.
The funeral will be more modest than the rites for past pontiffs: Pope Francis last year simplified the rules on papal funeral, with changes that include the use of a single wooden coffin instead of three.
After the mass, Francis' body will be buried in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, where seven other popes are buried.
Francis wrote in his will that he wanted his “last land journey to end up in this ancient Marian sanctuary”. He requested a simple tomb and not decorated with only the “Francesco” inscription, said the Vatican.
The churches of Rome will hold special masses in memory of Francis for nine days after the funeral.
Who should participate?
The world leaders and Catholic worshipers from all over the world will participate in the funeral. The planned participants include: President Trump, Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Great Britain, President Volodymyr Zelensky from Ukraine, President Javier Milei of Argentina and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil, the largest Catholic country in the world.
