The frozen smoothies sold to nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions were remembered after the drinks were linked to a firework of mortal listeria years, said the Food and Drug Administration on Friday.
Since 2018, at least 11 people died by the outbreak and dozen have been hospitalized, said the FDA, but the previous investigations had not been able to find a source of bacteria.
In 37 of the 38 known cases, the patients were hospitalized; 34 of the infects were in long -term assistance facilities or had been hospitalized before getting listeria.
The cases have been reported in 21 states, including California, Florida and New York. Since January 2024, there have been 20 cases and the epidemic is in progress, the FDA said.
The FDA declared on Friday that the epidemic had been connected to Lyons Readycare and Sycsco Imperial Frozen Shike, which are made to integrate meals. They are available in four -ounce cartons and in flavors such as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.
The FDA said she was warned on a listeria outbreak on November 25 and had started an investigation that found a connection with frozen smoothies after a review of the registers in the structures in which people who contracted the infection live.
The centers for the control and prevention of diseases have worked with the FDA to study the epidemic.
Lyons Magnus, the food service company that distributes the drinks, said on Saturday in a press release that was remembering the smoothies because they could be contaminated by bacteria, Listeria Monocytogenes.
The company said that drinks were mainly sold to long -term assistance structures and were not available for retail.
Most people who tire from food contaminated with listeria show symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting and muscle pain for a few days or no symptoms.
Some groups, including people aged or over 65 years of age, who are pregnant or who have a weakened immune system, have a greater risk of having a serious infection. Symptoms may appear on the same day when a person eats contaminated food or up to 10 weeks later, according to the FDA
The drinks were produced by Prairie Farms Dairy in an Fort Wayne structure in India, Lyons Magnus said. Prairie Farms did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
Sycsco, a food distribution company, declared on Friday in a press release that he recalled the smoothies and that he stopped the purchase of other products provided by Lyons Magnus from the Fort Wayne structure.
“Sycsco expresses our most sincere condolences with the people affected by this outbreak and their families,” said the company in a note.
